The Fourth Bishop Of Worcester Daniel P. Reilly -  Retired

 December 2, 2004

Portions of Deposition of Bishop Reilly released, Reilly testifies to sexual abuse of minor by Monsignor.

In a stunning revelations of facts, Texas Attorney Tahira Khan Merritt of Dallas was able to gain information previously unavailable to the public.  In a video deposition, Bishop Daniel Reilly September 24, 2004, under oath declared that for the first time publicly, that Monsignor Leo J. Battista has been presented to Rome to be defrocked.  "Because the case was so strong and it was really something that this woman felt was necessary for her to achieve  her fullness as a person again". Bishop Reilly informed Attorney Merritt.

The monsignor who has been former director of Catholic Charities, a diocesan human service agency, from 1969 until 1986, then became pastor of St. Anna's Parish in Leominster in 1986. In 1993 according to published statements the Monsignor resigns his position from St Anna's Parish

Bishop: Keep tradition going

PROVIDENCE - "You are part of a great tradition," Bishop Daniel P. Reilly, retired bishop of Worcester, Mass., told students at Bishop McVinney School. "Keep that tradition going."
The Sept. 13 visit to Bishop McVinney School, formerly named St. Michael School, capped a whirlwind "Providence Homecoming" weekend that included a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul and a testimonial dinner at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston on Sept. 12

Blue Mass lauds law enforcement

Daily sacrifices of personnel cited

WORCESTER- Two retired police chiefs and two current police officers were honored with awards yesterday at the ninth annual Blue Mass at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Worcester

Monsignor Tinsley, whose father and three brothers were Worcester police officers, compared police officers to the image of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

Voice note: This is again another effort of Catholic Bishops to elude prosecution by making special tributes to certain law enforcement officials.  Most notable would be the actions of Massachusetts State Police Commander Thomas Foley who has maintained a blind eye to the abuse of children, and families under his watch in Worcester.

$4.1M goal set for Bishop's Fund

WORCESTER- The annual Bishop's Fund appeal has already raised close to $900,000 as the Catholic Worcester Diocese kicks off its weekend fund-raising drive to be held today and tomorrow.
This year's theme is Called to be Christ to One Another.

The goal has been set at $4.1 million. Last year's Bishop's Fund raised $4 million. Over 43 years, the Bishop's Fund has raised about $99 million dollars for local charitable, educational and pastoral agencies and ministries.

Voice note: Last year the Bishop fund goal was only met when the dioceses placed it's own money in the fund.  Bishop Reilly should learn to practice what he preaches, "to be Christ to One Another" not one settlement has been offered in the clergy abuse situation. On the on the contrary we still diocesan lawyers attempting to intimate victims.

AS A ROMAN CATHOLIC pastor in the Diocese of Worcester, I offer my apologies
to the gay and lesbian members of our society, as well as to their families
and friends, for the hurt caused by recent videos, press releases, and
interviews associated with and distributed by the Massachusetts Catholic
Conference.

During this holy time of Lent, our church encourages its members to deepen
their relationships with God and to repair fractured relationships with
others.

Because much of the recent information dealing with gay and lesbian issues
produced and distributed by the conference does neither, it is important to
note that its views do not necessarily represent the views of all Catholic
clergy.

McManus to head diocese
WORCESTER- Auxiliary Bishop Robert J. McManus of Providence yesterday was named the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Worcester by Pope John Paul II, who also accepted the resignation of Bishop Daniel P. Reilly.

The bishop's seat in Worcester is now vacant - or sede vacante - until the diocesan consultors elect an interim administrator within the next week. The new bishop will be installed May 14........."We need new leadership in this diocese," said Laurie A. Letourneau of Shrewsbury, a Catholic active in anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage causes. She said she wants to meet with the new bishop to discuss concerns about lack of leadership on the local chancery's part.

All Catholics should read bishops’ charter

I have some concern with an article by Martin Lutrell presenting the results of the USCCB National Review Board’s audit of the Worcester Diocese (Telegram & Gazette, Jan. 9), in that, other than diocesan officials, only one Catholic lay person was interviewed. I think it is important that other views from the laity be heard.

Voice of the Faithful is a worldwide organization formed in response to the clergy sexual abuse crisis with many local members and four organized affiliates in the Worcester Diocese. VOTF believes this audit is a small, but important, step in restoring confidence that the Catholic Church in the future will operate with greater transparency to prevent the abuse of children. We realize these audits had a narrow scope, but are an indication of the bishops’ commitment to protect children, provide justice for the abused and restore trust among the faithful.

We were pleased to see that Bishop Daniel P. Reilly was among those who participated, and that the diocese is meeting the standards established by the USCCB.

We hope the Worcester Diocese will be in the forefront in establishing norms of conduct for clergy, parish workers and volunteers and that educational programs for parents, youth and children will be available soon.

We urge local Catholics to become familiar with the charter passed by the bishops in 2002 and to read the public report in its entirety.

Parents Continue to Object to Diocesan Child Protection Programs

Parents are new targets, no mention of Pedophile Priest in safe training program

It is becoming clear that programs being chosen by U.S. dioceses for the protection of children from sexual abuse, rather than putting the primary focus on potentially abusive clergy, are putting the children into an unwanted position as the first line of defense against the abusers.....told parents at the meeting that the reason they had been excluded from the program selection process was "that parents themselves might be predators".

As one parent in the Boston diocese pointed out, it seems odd that the Church, which relied on secular psychiatrists and doctors to excuse the shuffling of abusive clergy from one parish to another, would turn to the same secular "experts" to come up with a program to prevent child abuse

Pressure from bishops denounced by Pedone

WORCESTER- State Rep. Vincent A. Pedone,D-Worcester, a Roman Catholic, said yesterday that Massachusetts bishops are not telling their parishioners the truth about the state legislator's role in protecting what they call the sanctity of marriage.

Mr. Pedone said he loves his church and is a man of faith, but said he and other legislators are being pressured by the bishops via parishioners for action against gay marriage that no legislator can accomplish.

"I find it a concern that I could be banned from going to my church," Mr. Pedone said.

"The hierarchy of the Catholic Church is targeting the legislators because they cannot target the Supreme Judicial Court of this state," Mr. Pedone said yesterday.

Worcester Diocese Before Texas Court

Fort Worth Catholic Judge Ordered Recused

The Worcester Voice has learned from court records that " Roman Catholic Bishop of

Worcester, A Corporation Sole" and " Bishop George E. Rueger, Individually" have appeared

through counsel and filed their "Answer" in the 153 rd District Court of Tarrant County, Texas in

the case involving sexual abuse of two Texas minors by Worcester priest Thomas Teczar.

The on-going lawsuit claims, among other things, "that. . . in October of 1986, Father

[Raymond] Page, the Vicar General of the Worcester Diocese admitted to Bishop [Daniel] Reilly

of Norwich, CT that Teczar had left'. . . a trail of damaged youngsters . . . in one town . .  and

that . . . the police there were far from pleased . . . and that Teczar . . . is a risk for any Bishop

Indeed, [the suit goes on] Bishop Harrington wrote to Teczar in November of 1986, telling him

it would be difficult to gain his acceptance with another Bishop because the "liability is so

great."

Marriage rally not connected to the church

Ms. Letourneau said her organization is attempting to distance itself from the Catholic hierarchy, which is why she was angry to discover that the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, the political action arm of the bishops, was publicizing the rallies. She said she filed a complaint with the organization.

Weaker church tested on marriage

"I don't think it's a secret -- they acknowledge themselves -- their voice, their moral authority has been compromised by the sexual abuse scandals, and they know it," House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran, a devout Catholic and an opponent of same-sex marriage, said in an interview. "How do you rally and restore the influence of the church at a time when it's probably at its lowest point with regard to public regard? . . . If the Catholic Church locally is to recover a lot of its strength in attendance and respect and the like, it might not be for a period of 50 years."

"The scandal both weakened the church's role and inhibited the church," Birmingham said

Walsh said the scandal devastated the church's influence.

"It will never be the same," she said. "It might be better someday, but not someday soon."

Legal community honors 4

The annual Red Mass of the St. Thomas More Society of the Worcester diocese attracted about 200 people first to the liturgy in St. Paul's Cathedral and later at dinner in the Hogan Center Ballroom at College of the Holy Cross. The event has been held in this diocese since 1957.

Bishop Daniel P. Reilly, principal celebrant, greeted the lawyers, judges and their guests while the Rev. Richard F. Reidy, cathedral rector, talked about St. Thomas More and what he stood for.

Mitchell of Clinton received the Distinguished Attorney Award for his years of service. Charles W. "Dino" Patronas, member of St. Spyridon Cathedral and executive secretary and deputy registrar of the Worcester Probate and Family Court, was awarded the Distinguished Ecumenical Award. His pastor, the Rev. Dean Paleologos, was also a guest. John J. Bish, probation officer in the East Brookfield District Court, received the Distinguished Layperson Award. Bishops didn't OK same-sex benefits

The bishops yesterday sent a letter called "Don't Believe The Headlines" to all legislators and published explanations in diocesan newspapers.

Monday October 6, 2003

The following letter to Bishop Daniel P. Reilly has been sent to show the recent dissatisfaction with the continued projection of false information in regards to treatment of clergy abuse victims in the Worcester Dioceses.

Dear Bishop Reilly,

The continue projection of propaganda by the Diocese of Worcester at this stage of the clergy abuse crisis is inexcusable.  The truth remains that Travelers Insurance Company attorney, Joanne L. Goulka has "harassed" medical and psychological professionals of one plaintiff. In a memorandum filed with Worcester Superior Court for yet another Kelley victim Ms Goulka claims the plaintiff is "motivated by bad faith”.  Additionally, another Rev Kelley victim charged Ms Goulka with financial threats to dissuade legal remedies against the Dioceses of Worcester. All while the true facts are, that in two separate legal depositions Rev Kelley has already admitted to abusing some of these plaintiffs.

Priest pleads not guilty

Ouellette faces 18 counts of larceny over $250K

Gary V. Murray, TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER-
The Rev. Donald C. Ouellette pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges of stealing more than $250,000 from Immaculate Conception Church in Fitchburg.

The Roman Catholic priest, who has been placed on administrative leave by the Catholic Diocese of Worcester, was indicted this month on 18 counts of larceny of more than $250,000 from Immaculate Conception parish, where he formerly served as pastor. The thefts allegedly occurred between March 15, 2001, and Jan. 2 of this year.

Rev. Ouellette, 48, was arraigned yesterday in Worcester Superior Court. Judge John S. McCann released him on personal recognizance and continued the case to Oct. 22 at the request of Assistant District Attorney Richard L. Greco and Rev. Ouellette's lawyer, Thomas F. McEvilly.

When the indictments were returned by a Worcester County grand jury, District Attorney John J. Conte said he understood that the money that was stolen had been raised by parishioners for an elevator at the church. The district attorney said he did not known what motive Rev. Ouellette might have had for taking the money.

He said Bishop Daniel P. Reilly requested an investigation after parishioners reported that money was missing from the church. The investigation that led to the indictments against Rev. Ouellette was conducted by state police detectives assigned to Mr. Conte's office.

Mr. McEvilly declined to comment on the charges after yesterday's arraignment, saying it would be inappropriate to do so.

Parish priest indicted in theft

Rev. Ouellette charged in theft of Fitchburg parish's $250,000

District Attorney John J. Conte said yesterday Rev. Ouellette will be arraigned in Worcester Superior Court at some future date.
The bishop in March placed Rev. Ouellette on medical leave after parishioners discovered money was missing. His status was recently changed to administrative leave. The Rev. Thien Nguyen was appointed parish administrator.

"All of us share a great concern at the possibility that the trust which parishioners have placed in their pastor was apparently broken by the misappropriation of parish funds," Bishop Reilly said yesterday.

The 42-year-old priest begins his stewardship of the Walnut Street church just as Worcester County District Attorney John Conte says a months-long criminal probe into the parish's untold amounts of missing funds is nearly complete.

The bishop has since placed Ouellette, who lives in Worcester, on administrative leave, rather than medical leave, according to the diocesan chancellor, Monsignor Thomas Sullivan.

Dioceses expand fight against child abuse

Staff and wire reports

This week the Office for Healing and Prevention sponsored four, two hour training programs and two sessions are to be held Tuesday at St. Bernard Central Catholic High School in Fitchburg. Mrs. Engdahl said that more than 100 priests and 750 schoolteachers are among those who have attended workshops that explain the signs, symptoms and types of child abuse. All parish religious education teachers, even teenagers over the age of 14 who help out, are required to attend.

Lory Santoro and Janet Dorr of Daybreak, a violence prevention project of the YWCA, presented the program at Ascension that also included how and where to report suspected child abuse and how to talk to a child who tells you he or she has been abused

Voice Note: This training is an attempt to hide the real and tragic problems of clergy sexual abuse.  This issue is not the failure to report child abuse. The real issue is still the protective closed door operation of the Catholic Church, and the inability of legal authorities to actually prosecute theses "predators".  It appears in Worcester County, prosecution is not based on actions but association.  Not one attempt was made at teaching these "well meaning" people to deal with turning in a  "violator" who they believe has abused a child.  No emphases on being strong enough to stand up to the Diocesan Officials, who to this day are the same people who have been in control of our Dioceses and allowed this sexual abuse to continue for years.   These are the real issues of clergy child sexual abuse.  The Office of Healing is powerless to make any real and meaningful changes.  The only outcome of this training  was to put more (of your) children in harms way.

Bishops rally ministers to fight 'gay' marriage

1 year after 'pedophile priests' scandal, Catholic clergy want constitutional ban

© 2003 WorldNetDaily.com

...........Last year, the Catholic Church underwent its biggest crisis in memory with the twin revelations of widespread sexual abuse on the part of priests, and cover-ups by high-level clergy.

In explaining the "pedophile priest" scandal, Father Donald B. Cozzens, author of "The Changing Face of the Priesthood," said on NBC's Meet the Press last year: "The real problem the Catholic Church faces is the disproportionate number of gay men that populate our seminaries. I think we have to ask the question: Why are 90 to 95 – and some estimates say as high as 98 – percent of the victims of clergy acting out against teen-agers, boys? Why isn't there ... a higher percentage of teen-age girls?"

The 'gay' truth

by Kevin McCulough

Editor's note: The following column contains sexual imagery which some people will find objectionable.

The "gay" lifestyle does nothing to promote monogamous healthy relationships. Why? Because there is little, if anything, healthy about nihilism, narcissism and compulsive sexual addiction. Yet the community where these traits are not only seen, but also encouraged, is again among individuals wrapped up in the "gay life." ........It is damaging to families. Heck, it destroys them. The "alphas" in homosexual relationships, be they men or women, are many times recruiting younger partners. A vast percentage of those who enter the homosexual life do so after having been sexually initiated by an older person of their sex – be it consensual or not – it usually has the feel of enticement or seduction. Homosexuality also destroys families by preventing their future possibility. Frank and Charlie can't have kids – at least not as God designed it. This basic, simple word picture should be easy to understand

How Many Families have suffered in the Norwich, Conn, and Worcester Dioceses due to Daniel P. Reilly's needles shuffling of Priest with Reassignments clearly made with full knowledge of pastoral sexual misconduct and creditable allegations. Who among us should not stand taller the average pillar, to be in the position that a Bishop holds, in obedience to his flock, Daniel P. Reilly must maintain extreme dignity and responsibility but more that that he must stand with moral accountability.

How can the loyal Catholic's in Worcester Dioceses ever begin to heal with this constant barrage of inappropriate activities and dissemination of false information?
